So then, there remains a special rest for the people of God; for the one who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.
(Hebrews 4:9–10)
We all live very busy days, filled with activities and a lot of work. When we think about rest, we usually connect it only with vacation time—yet even that often gets filled with more tasks. But think about it: didn’t God command us to rest? Are we actually doing it? The Bible clearly speaks about rest. Whether or not we observe a specific day, as children of God we should listen to what He tells us: rest.
Even though He is God—and doesn’t need rest—the Lord of the universe set the example by resting after creation. Socially, we often set aside Saturday or Sunday to rest. But so many activities can turn the weekend into something just as exhausting as the weekdays. Our spiritual rest is found in Christ, but physical rest also needs to be part of our lives. Rest with God and receive renewed strength and encouragement for the journey.
Learn to rest with God
The need for constant activity can become a habit that affects many people. If this is your case, pray and ask God for forgiveness.
Consider setting aside one day each week to rest. Use that time to be in communion with God—through prayer, reading the Bible, and worship—as well as spending time with family, friends, and enjoying personal downtime.
Rest is essential to renew your strength and spirit. Take a break from daily activities, refresh your mind, and strengthen your faith through God’s Word. Make a reading plan and study the Bible more deeply.
Use your rest time to relax and connect with nature and with others. Try not to spend too much time on screens (phone, computer, or TV).
The opposite extreme can also be harmful—be careful with laziness. Use your time wisely, with balance and intention.
Prayer:
Lord God, forgive me if I haven’t set aside enough time to rest. That may be why I’ve been feeling so tired and stressed lately. I need to depend more on You and recognize that You give us enough time to live a balanced life. Help me make good use of the time You’ve given me. I want to enjoy the good things You have provided, spend time with You, share meaningful moments with my family, and rest physically. Help me obey Your Word—working diligently and resting as You have taught us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
